Surf Lessons Croyde

surf instructor teaching beginner to surf in sea

Learn to Surf in Croyde, North Devon

Croyde beach is a renowned surfing bay in a spectacular location and has been the location of the British Surfing Championships on three occasions. The bay offers a wide expanse of golden sand backed by sand dunes and green fields. The surf in Croyde is famed for the consistency of the waves that break virtually every day. This is partly due to the favourable direction Croyde faces into the ocean ensuring swell from anywhere in the North Atlantic reaches our shores. We have helped beginners learn to surf at Croyde since 1996 and find that most days provide an excellent wave to learn.

Our Croyde surf school is located just steps from Croyde beach and is conveniently situated in the beach car park off Moor Lane in Croyde. The surf school has a reception area, male and female changing rooms, indoor and outdoor seating areas and a toilet facility.  The surf school is where your lesson begins and where you will meet our instructors, get kitted out with wetsuits and surfboards and then head to the beach for your surfing experience. Your surf lesson begins with 15 to 20 minutes of on land coaching and this usually takes place on Croyde Beach. However if the weather is not ideal we can begin your surf lesson in the dry and warmth of the surf school.

Thanks so much for a fantastic weekend - we're all still absolutely and completely stoked about our first surf lessons! It still brings a smile to my face every time I think about how much fun we had!

During your first surf lesson at Croyde you will learn the techniques of catching waves, standing up and correct body position as well as surf safety. Even during the first lesson there is plenty of time in the sea to practice your skills and most students stand up in their first lesson although only briefly. It is during the second and third lessons where we have more time to focus in depth and ensure that you are not only standing but in control of the surfboard and achieving longer rides. After a weekend course with us at Croyde (three sessions), the vast majority of participants are standing up and riding waves successfully. For more detail on learning to surf see our page here.

Fortunately, if the surf conditions at Croyde prove to be too powerful or unsuitable for beginners we can re-locate to Saunton Sands or Putsborough Beach, both locations being within a five minute drive. The village of Croyde is a picture postcard location of traditional thatched cottages, surf shops, restaurants and pubs. The village offers a range of accommodation catering for all budgets including a number of campsites, cottages, B&Bs and hotels. Three busy pubs provide good food and entertainment, great places to relax and relive the day. And of course, no visit to Devon would be complete without a Devon Cream Tea, available in many of the local eateries and highly recommended after a tiring day in the surf!

Don't worry - there's plenty to do!

For non-surfers, Croyde offers stunning walks along the South West Coastal Footpath, horse riding with the local riding stables and golf at the nearby Saunton Sands Golf Course. For the more adventurous there is the opportunity to try coasteering and rock climbing on the headland of Baggy Point. For many though, the attraction of Croyde lies in the unhurried pace of life, with downtime enjoyed in a location that possesses the benefits of a beachfront, holiday village in a tranquil, rural setting. Don’t just take our word for it, here’s a recent poll showing Croyde as the UK’s top surfing beach. Croyde number 1 surfing beach in UK.
