The Surf

The Weligama area of Sri Lanka provides a fine selection of consistent surf breaks, all within a short stretch of coastline, and set in a rich tropical location. Situated in the south west of Sri Lanka, the island that Marco Polo described as “The finest island in the world,” the area is open to the same long distance south west swells that hit Indonesia.

Weligama is a beautiful large bay, at the centre of which is a fun, consistent beach break, which has no rocks, currents or other hazards. This makes it the perfect location for both beginner and intermediate surfers to share the experience of riding uncrowded tropical waves.

Uncrowded Beach

A 5 minute Tuk Tuk ride out of Weligama, along the coast road towards Midigama and Ahangama, are a large selection of reef and point break waves, all of which are easy to access, relatively mellow and very inviting for intermediate surfers wanting to get their first experience of non beach break waves. Due to the higher latitude of Sri Lanka to Indonesia, some slight swell decay occurs, making this the perfect stepping stone to experiencing more challenging waves, like the famous spots of Bali and other neighbouring Indonesian islands, if that is one of your surfing goals.

The Location

Our base is a family run hotel situated right on the beach, directly in front of the break at Weligama. The Sri Lankan couple who own the hotel were born and raised in the area, and have been running it for 14 years. Like all of the locals, they are friendly, warm and extremely welcoming. The hotel has a traditional Sri Lankan decor and all rooms are en-suite with showers, mosquito nets and a patio area overlooking the break.

When you’re not surfing, enjoy eating in the restaurant, located directly on the beach in the hotel’s gardens, serving both traditional and western cuisine. There is also an elevated seating area, where you can watch others ride the waves below you while you enjoy your meal. Your holiday cost includes a healthy breakfast and buffet-style evening meal every day.
Single, double and triple rooms are available and there is no problem if you are travelling alone and want to reduce costs, as we can team you up with one or two others (of the same sex) to share with.

Other Activities

If surfing and sunbathing on the golden sands in front of the hotel isn’t enough, there are plenty of other activities on offer. Explore the fishing village of Weligama, watching local fishermen land and sell their daily catch. There are Buddhist Temples nearby, as well as numerous national parks, home to elephants, leopards and a vast array of magnificent birds.

A short ride around the headland out of Weligama, you will find the beautiful village of Marissa, where you can take a whale watching tour or go diving with a PADI accredited school. Take a train half an hour up the coast to the city of Galle, Sri Lanka’s most historically interesting city, home to a 36 hectare world heritage Dutch built fort. There are also museums, fantastic architecture, shops and restaurants. The south west of Sri Lanka really does have it all!

" I would like to thank the instructors I had on Tuesday they were brilliant in teaching me the basics and making me confident in the sea, and advancing my new found skill and love for surfing. I am returning to Croyde next year for a week/weekend course with Surf South West as I enjoyed the experience so much. "
