Big day for aspiring surf students

A joint initiative between a Croyde-based surf school and a local college has helped more than 50 students hone their water sports skills.

The pupils, aged between 12 and 16, all attend Ilfracombe College and were given expert tuition from the instructors at Surf South West.  Eight aspiring surfers, who have already reached a high standard of surfing, were given advanced coaching while around 50 youngsters from the college were taught the basics.

All the students were presented with certificates of achievement by Darren Burrett, owner of Surf South West and Ralph Birkmyre who is an instructor at the school and teaches at Ilfracombe College.

Due to the success of the event Darren is now hoping to make the venture an annual event.

Just a quick word of thanks for your part in making our time in Lanzarote such a great success. We had a brilliant time which exceeded both our expectations. We were both impressed by your instructors approach; they both struck an excellent balance between providing professional coaching guidance whilst also being very approachable, encouraging and supportive with respect to their offers of help. We both feel we benefited considerably given our lack of ability. I personally feel that I progressed more in my time with them in five days in the water than I have over the last six months faffing around trying to teach myself! Surfing at J-Bay
