School Surf Lessons

School and community groups

Every year, we find more schools are looking for a safe, adventurous activity for their students. We offer considerable discounts to school and community groups and find that participants on our courses not only learn about sea safety and wave formation, but also relish the challenge of learning a new skill in a natural environment. Many schools incorporate surfing in their activity weeks and we have some schools that have been visiting us annually since 1997. If required, we can also assist with arranging group accommodation and other activities. We also offer to surfing lessons at special rates for all community groups such as scout groups, guide groups, sea scouts and youth groups.

About us and our surf lessons for schools

We have been established since 1996 as the premier surfing centre in the UK and Surf South West is proud to be the first surf school to be awarded Level 4 status by the British Surfing Association. This is the highest level attainable and is awarded in recognition that Surf South West has the highest standards of coaching. In 2011 Surf South West was also the first surf school to be awarded the prestigious, 'Centre of Excellence' status by the sport's new governing body, Surfing GB.

Health and Safety

The safety of participants on our courses is our number one priority. Surf South West adhere to coaching ratios of 1 instructor to 8 students. All Surf South West instructors are British Surfing Association and Surfing GB qualified and hold a recognised Beach Lifeguard Award.

A.A.L.A.

Surfing is considered a safe “inshore" activity by the A.A.L.A. and therefore they do not issue licences to surf schools. However Surf South West follows all A.A.L.A. guidelines as well as recommendations and guidelines set out by the British Surfing Association. All instructors with school groups have been checked through the Criminal Records Bureau, and all senior coaches have attended ‘Good Practice and Child Protection’ workshops, run by Sports Coach UK. We are happy to provide risk assessment documents, C.R.B. check details, our insurance policy and instructor qualifications.

Courses

We offer a wide range of courses and can usually accommodate all requests. Some groups will visit us for a half day ‘taster’ session while others visit for a whole week. A popular option for local groups is to book a set time each week to spread a longer course over a number of weeks. Contact us with your group’s individual requirements and we will do our best to customise your surfing course.
