The early season at the surf school is always great fun. As well as being able to enjoy the luxury of less crowds on the beach and in the water during our surf lessons, it is also a busy time of year for us running Beach Lifeguard and Surf Instructor courses. Spring is the time of year when all people wishing to work a summer season on the beach need to make sure they have all the necessary qualifications in place.
We are proud to be a training centre that runs the 5 day RLSS Beach Lifeguard qualifications. Our two head instructors John and Will are both qualified RLSS trainer and assessors, qualified to deliver and assess candidates through the course. Both John and Will are highly experienced coaches and have been working every day on Croyde beach for nearly a decade. With our centre located directly on the beach at Croyde, we have a classroom facility, changing rooms, as well as all the necessary kit to run all modules of the beach lifeguard course from one place.
This years beach lifeguard courses have been very popular, and run in lovely spring sunshine with excellent surf conditions. The ideal forecast for a beach lifeguard course is to have enough surf to test candidates water ability, but not get too intense to make being in the water dangerous and challenging. If surf conditions do get too large, we are lucky to have the option of a secondary location at nearby Saunton Sands, so always have a good location to run our courses. However, so far this season the conditions at Croyde have provided the perfect learning environment during all our courses, allowing the candidates to learn the necessary skills to pass the assessment first time.
Immediately following all our beach lifeguard courses, we run the Surfing GB, ISA Level 1 surf coach course. Our senior instructor John is the only trainer and assessor for the ISA and SGB running the course in Devon. Our centre at Croyde is perfectly set up to run the course, which involves a mix of practical beach sessions with some classroom work. With our location on the beach, we are able to change and be on the waters edge immediately after being in the classroom to put all the theory into practice.
The surf instructor courses have been very popular so far this year. The prospect of working on the beach everyday, meeting new people and introducing them to such a fantastic sport has meant that not surprisingly, candidates looking to start a coaching career have come from all over the UK and Europe to complete the qualification with us. Following the completion of the two day course, there is a further requirement to complete 20hrs coaching work experience under the guidance of a qualified instructor. As one of the larges surfing centres and a registered centre of excellence with Surfing GB, we are able to offer the work experience to all candidates that complete the course with us. You will have the opportunity to work alongside a large number of level 3 coaches, learning the skills involved with being an effective surf instructor.
Now that Easter is behind us, the next big holiday everyone is working towards is the whitsun half term. We still have beach lifeguard and surf instructor courses running each month leading up to the start of the school summer holidays in the UK.
