Princes Trust Go Surfing

Princes Trust Go Surfing

20 Years ago Surf South West owner Darren Burrett had a vision to set up the first surf school in Croyde. Having just returned from a mammoth round the world surf trip, Darren turned to the Princes Trust to secure a loan to get the Surf School off the ground. Fast-forward 20 years and thanks to the initial help the business received from the Trust, Surf South West is now celebrating its 20th birthday.

As part of our birthday celebrations, Darren wanted to give something back to the Princes Trust as way of a thank you. He contacted the local college where the Trust runs a 12-week personal development program for local young adults. We were stoked to welcome the group to the surf school for the afternoon recently, where we were able to take them all surfing at Croyde as part of their course.

The conditions couldn’t have been more perfect. The sun was shining and as it was early season, we had the ideal 2ft waves all to ourselves. All the guys had a fantastic time, and enjoyed catching and riding waves for the first time. Everyone was smiling and finished the session full of energy and keen to do it again.

Throughout the year we will be working with the Trust to offer work based placements for its students both at the surf school and as part of the beach ranger team at Ruda Holiday Park. We can’t wait to continue mentoring the young adults on the program and hope that being involved with our team and going surfing everyday will be a positive influence on their lives.
